Don Draper is Alive and Well...and Living in India!

Okay, I totally would not know about this article, Your Vagina Isn't Just Too Big, Too Floppy and Too Hairy--It's Also Too Brown if my husband hadn't seen it, guffawed and passed it along with the comment,

"You should blog about this."

This is a real cream designed to bleach your external lady parts (at least, I hope it's external) so you are more appealing to your man.

And in case you think the ad guru who came up with this campaign is anything more than a self congratulatory, narcissistic OLD MAN, think again.   Here are a few more of his gems:

"When you have experience like I have—about 50 years in advertising and more in theatre—then you realise that a lot of people don’t talk out of experience, they talk out of book knowledge."
"When I launched KS, the country’s first sexy condom, young Indians just fell in love with it. They even forgot that The Kamasutra was actually a manual on sex written hundreds of years ago."
"If the country’s blue-noses, the moral police (and I’d like to rename them the moral morons) think voters in India, especially middle-class voters, feel sex is bad, they must look into a few bedrooms, and also backseats of taxis, and also little cosy nooks in parks."
"Kissing on Indian screens is now acceptable. Five years ago, it was not. "

From kissing on screens to bleaching your vagina cream on TV...how far we've come.

Advertisements Don Draper Might Have Created

Two years ago, almost to the day, I wrote what is my third most popular post, Advertisements:  What Were They Thinking?   This morning, a YouTube video caught my eye.

I love the lack of imagination when it comes to how women are portrayed.  We are just waiting for that man of ours to turn us on whether it's by shaving, wearing cologne or making sure we buy the right tire for our car.  I could change a tire in my late teens for Pete's sake.  Yes, with lug nuts and a wrench.

Obesity and over-eating is celebrated in the Alka Seltzer commercials.  As long as you can get rid of the discomfort, eat all you want!

I like the safari dudes portaging the Jeep across the desert sands to get to Amoco gas.  Doesn't say much for Jeep though.

Campbells and General Mills team up for the best promotional offer ever!  Can you imagine serving V8 juice with Cheerios, Kix or Frosted Flakes?  I bet this concept bit the big one.  That's why they threw in the moon rocket kit hook.  Did you notice there's no address for the mail-in?  Just Mount Vernon 10 NY.  Two digit zips in them thar days.

Ahh, cheap highs with Colt 45 Malt Liquor.  I remember that piccolo jingle.  I think the guy has a fly on the upper left temple.   And we finally come to the cigarette ads.  I used to smoke Tareytons back in the day.  It must have been the black eye that did it.

Booze and cigs bringing the 60s to a close.  So appropriate for those times, eh Don?

Poor Betty Draper

As a long time fan of the AMC series, Mad Men, I'm struck by the current series of  "Fat Betty" jokes.

The former model turned model wife of Mad Avenue's hunky and brilliant Don Draper, turned divorcee, turned remarried wife of political adviser to NY Gov.Nelson Rockefeller Henry Francis, Betty Draper Francis has undergone a series of changes in her tv life, now in its fifth season, all fraught with emotion and complicated by her precarious mental health, now punctuated by binge eating.

I don't personally tweet or facebook but I read and interact as the "face" of my company.  I recently came across this back and forth and it caught my attention.

@BettyDraper while trying to present appropriate behavior can be sweet, needy, bitchy, cruel, but most of the time she's just a woman with very low self esteem.  I guess that lets her off the hook.  Episode 9 Season 5 shows the depths of Betty's despair; her anger, her hopelessness, her cruelty to her daughter when she reveals a secret about Don.

@_FatBetty and @DonDrapersLiver on Twitter are having a field day with the character.   As for me, she drives me crazy and she elicits my sympathy.  I feel her pain.... No, not really.  But I think the actress, January Jones, does an excellent job.

Poor Betty.  This is what she keeps getting in the mail.

I thought only guys did this.
